Ashwag has a wealth of experience in the field of public health management and policy. Her work experience includes health care administration, health insurance plans, financing reforms, designing context-based interventions, and community engagement in health. She developed the first training manual on social accountability tools and mechanisms to strengthen community-based social accountability mechanisms for primary health care in Sudan. Ashwag's passion for bridging the gap between research and practical implementation led her to co-found DAR Innovation for Consultancies and Health Solutions, an agency with the aim of finding contextually relevant solutions in public health by aligning research insights with on-the-ground realities.  In 2023, she won the first-place award for her poster presentation at the Africa Health Conference, showcasing her pioneering community engagement project in Sudan.

Her research interests include healthcare utilization and access in rural and fragile settings, value-based care, healthcare financing, and payment reforms. Ashwag's ultimate aspiration is to make a substantial contribution to global healthcare delivery, with a special emphasis on enhancing the well-being of vulnerable populations.
